On Net Neutrality: Damn the Man

06.12.2006

The reason that I went into web design is because I love the fucking Internet. I can’t say that enough. I love my profession because it’s the new frontier. Trails are being blazed in uncharted territory, there are still some lawless domains and the little guy still has the hope of making it big with some sort of ‘net venture. I love the freedom of information and the corroboration and camaraderie of the open source movement, which would have been nil where it not for the ‘net.

These features of the Internet may not be around for much longer if the incumbent corporations flex their power and usurp the network. We should be thankful that it took the Telecoms this long to realize the ‘net will surpass all other forms of media. In this time the ‘net has flourished into a beautiful, free-flow flux of information.

The rapid innovation that happens on the internet is a result no regulation and easy access for publishers and readers. Dividing the net into different levels of access is unfair and it will stifle innovation, progress, and freedom: all the principles that make the Internet the amazing tool it is today. It is no wonder that all the web pioneers, like Craig Newark, who have crafted and grown brilliant web properties, are against this schism.
